The
construction of a port in Baía do
Caboto, in the municipality of Candeias, was
due to the implementation project of the Centro
Industrial de Aratu (Aratu Industrial Site) (CIA),
during the seventies. The idea was that the industrial
site would alter the State’s economic profile,
and would, therefore, need a harbor’s support
for its production to outflow.
Therefore,
the harbor’s establishment work
began in 1971, through a partnership with the
Government of Bahia. The project’s first
phases were inaugurated four years latter, comprising
the pier, the terminal, and the storage yard
for solid bulks (TGS), in addition to the supply,
electric energy, and road systems.
From Codeba’s construction, Aratu facilities
were incorporated to the Company’s assets,
and the government of Bahia became one of its
shareholders.
Currently,
the Harbor of Aratu concentrates 60% of Codeba’s operation volume, offering
essential support, not only to the CIA (Aratu
Industrial Site), as anticipated in the initial
project, but also to the Petrochemical Site in
Camaçari and to the development of mineralogical
activities in the State.
The symbiosis
with the petrochemical site was responsible for
the introduction of more technology
to the port’s terminals. Presently, Aratu
has four terminals, one for gas products (TPG),
with a crib of 180 meters; one for liquid bulks
(TGL), with two cribs which add up 340 meters,
and two for solid bulks (TGS), with three cribs,
with a total extension of 366 meters.
With the
new wave of economic development that has begun
to surface since the establishment
of the Ford Company in 2001 in Camaçari,
the Harbor of Aratu opens its doors to new transformations,
already under feasibility studies by Codeba.
The target is to inaugurate a new era at the
port with the most up to date equipment, which
will increase the work agility and the flow of
sea crafts along with the management and distribution
of cargoes.
